Today, when the world pauses to celebrate love, my heart travels back to the woman who first taught me what love truly means.

Mama,
Ai may have restored your photograph, but it is memory that restores your presence.

Last night, as I looked into your eyes in that beautifully revived image,
I saw you in a way I had never quite seen before.
The strength.
The quiet determination.
The softness wrapped in resilience.

Yes — you were truly beautiful.
But your beauty was never just in your face.
It was in your sacrifice.

A full day in the classroom as a primary school teacher…
then private lessons.
Night school.
Extra hours.
No complaints.

You worked as a recorder at athletics events.
You stood tall as part of the then South Eastern State contingent to FESTAC ’77.
You carried your faith like a shield and your family like a crown.

I grew up watching your hands —
knitting, sewing, mending, creating.
Your fingerprints were on everything in our home.
You toiled.
You strived.
You sacrificed.

And in all of it,
you never compromised your Catholic faith.

It still aches that you did not live long enough to reap the full harvest of your labor.
But I trust the God you served so faithfully.
It pleased Him to call you home.
And heaven gained a woman of rare grace.

Mama,
your Akaniyene is holding on.
Holding on to the values you and Papa planted.
Holding on to faith.
Holding on to integrity.
Holding on to love.

On this Valentine’s Day,
I celebrate you as my first example of unconditional love.
