If you’ve sent out 50+ applications and heard nothing back… it might not be your skills. It’s your CV.
Here are 5 common CV mistakes PhDs make when applying outside academia and how to fix them!

1. Listing every publication instead of relevant skills
❌ Mistake: “Published in Nature, 2022.” (Great, but HR doesn’t know what that means.)
✅ Fix: Translate into skills. Example → Published peer-reviewed research after leading a multi-year project, managing deadlines, and collaborating with an international team.

2. Using academic jargon
❌ Mistake: “Investigated epistemological frameworks…”
✅ Fix: Reframe into industry language. Example → Analyzed complex data sets to identify trends and develop actionable insights for stakeholders.

3. Hiding transferable skills
❌ Mistake: Only listing “PhD in Molecular Biology.”
✅ Fix: Highlight cross-industry skills. Example → Project management: coordinated a 3-year research timeline, supervised 2 junior researchers, and secured $30k in grant funding.

4. Wrong format (academic CV instead of resume)
❌ Mistake: Sending a 12-page academic CV.
✅ Fix: Keep it 1–2 pages. Focus on impact, not every detail. Example → Instead of “Taught undergrad classes,” write “Delivered 40+ hours of training to groups of 50+, improving course feedback scores by 20%.”

5. Not tailoring to the job description
❌ Mistake: One generic CV sent everywhere.
✅ Fix: Match keywords from job ads. Example → If the role says “data analysis + stakeholder communication,” pull those words directly into your CV where relevant.
