I didn’t leave academia because I failed.

I left because I realized I didn’t have to suffer to make an impact.

If you’re a PhD or postdoc wondering if industry is “selling out,” I want to offer a different perspective grounded in facts:

✅ You are overqualified for most entry-level roles, and that’s a GOOD thing.
The ability to teach yourself new systems, design projects from scratch, and self-motivate? Employers in R&D, consulting, and even tech startups love that. You just need help translating it.

✅ Industry doesn’t mean giving up research. It means applying it faster.
If you love testing, iteration, collaboration, and impact you’ll likely find more satisfaction outside the academic echo chamber. Innovation happens in labs, teams, and even user interviews, not just journals.

✅ You’re not starting over, you’re bringing a toolbox no one else has.
In a team of generalists, you’re the deep thinker. You know how to ask better questions. And yes, you know how to finish things.

✅ The prestige won’t feel like a loss when the burnout lifts.
The guilt, the overwork, the unpaid labor… it’s not noble. It’s normalized dysfunction. Leaving it behind doesn’t make you weak. It means you finally put yourself at the center of your own career.

If you’re scared to leave, you’re not broken. You’re brave!
