Sustaining Performance:
The longer we do something, the better we get at it. The problem is that when we get good at something it stops being a challenge. This is when we search for novel exercises and challenges to keep ourselves mentally occupied. 
This is a process that’s driven by a neurotransmitter called dopamine. It gives us the drive to succeed and dominate our environments, but it doesn’t help us sustain performance. Novelty seeking is a dopamine driven process which is why it has a high failure rate when it comes to performance; something different is needed. 
The neurotransmitters serotonin and oxytocin make up the H&N circuits. H&N stands for here and now and when these circuits are active the dopamine circuits, which are concerned with the future, are suppressed. 
To achieve sustained performance it makes sense to focus less on what we can get, like PR’s and winning, and focus on what we can do right now to nurture and grow the talent that we do have. No gimmicks, no shortcuts, just doing what it takes.
