Just off the shores of the Gunadule peoples’ territory in Panama, exists more than 80% of the country’s coral reefs.
.
Coral reefs are vital to our planet. They are nurseries for marine animals, natural barriers for coast lines, and even a resource for modern medicine.

But in recent years, at least 75% of global coral reefs have died.
.
The Guandule people have passed on the knowledge to help preserve and protect the corals for generations. But as threats from climate change and increased tourism grow, they are fighting an uphill battle.
.
The Gunadule say losing their reefs means "being deprived of our food sovereignty, medicine and protection,” according to Gunadule photographer Duiren Wagua who sent us these photos.
.
“The Gunadule people today have an inescapable commitment to take care of the sea,” says Duiren.
