It was a cold winter day.
My little daughter was only one year old.

That morning, after days had passed, we entered our home once again.
She looked around…
As if she sensed an absence,
as if something essential was missing,
yet she could not know what it was.
She began to cry.

I held her tightly…
Still, I could not stop her tears.

That morning, her mother had died.

We were playing in the garden with the neighbor’s children.
My father called me twice; I didn’t go, I couldn’t.
The game was too sweet—
sweet enough to make one forget time itself.

When my mother came and hurried me home,
the moment we stepped inside,
my father’s slap struck my face.

From that day on, I never loved playing again.
Now I understand:
this is why I forbade myself pleasure and joy!
