The issue of childcare is a topic I deeply care about. Eight years ago when it had my first baby, I couldn’t afford paying $450 a week for daycare a month, that was half my paycheck. So it meant our son went to a daycare that honestly wasn’t great and the workers were over capacity.

We pulled him out early, and my husband stood home with him till we found care for him.

That same year it just so happened that I went to grad school, and the college I attended offered childcare all year around from 2k to pre- k, at a very low cost. He grew and was so loved there.

I had my second son, became a stay at home mom after realizing that I want to spend more time at home and I financially could afford it without having to worry about finances in NYC.

And two years later, I got pregnant of my third, I got really sick and due to weekly hospital visits I was encouraged not to go back to work physically though we weren’t doing well financially anymore. However, that meant I qualified for head start, which allowed my son to go to school at two years old. He thrived so well in this free program.

I had my third baby, still couldn’t find work that would allow me to balance parenthood and so I made the decision to continue at home and find other ways to work from home in order to still meet the needs of my family. I leaned into government support like SNAP & any other free resources the city offers. Because the truth was, paying over $2k for childcare would already cancel out my paycheck. I would still be struggling and not spending time with my kids.

many parents are experiencing these same struggles. @nycmayor is paving the way for parents to feel less of the weight of childcare. He’s providing opportunities and options for parents to have choices and not just survive.

Thank you for having me @zohrankmamdani @nycmayor
