Immigration conversations are always deeply personal to me. It’s a topic the brings up a lot emotions for me. I was raised by my mom and aunts, three immigrant women, who crossed the border for a dream. They weren’t just dreaming of their future and kids, but those that would come after them. They didn’t have a childhood; they worked as kids. I remember my aunt sharing with me how she had a doll, but never got to play with it because she needed to work at a young age. They didn’t get to go to high school or get a sweet 16. One left first, and the other two followed. Risking it all just for a dream, without actually knowing if they would survive crossing to the United States.

For a long time, I watched my mom clean apartments and never really be around. For a long time, I didn’t get it. I wasn’t a mom, and I didn’t see what I see now. She didn’t experience the motherhood I have. I have choices; she never did. I have a degree that she never obtained but I got to obtain because of her hard work. I didn’t have to work at a young age to help her as a single mom; I have the choice. I’ve had the choice to be a stay-at-home mom, the choice to work, the choice to choose my kids over my job.

I have choices not because I was born here; I have choices because my mother made one. One that would change my family’s future forever. So while she never got to experience this motherhood with me, I’m thankful I get to experience this motherhood. I remember getting my master’s and two months later telling my mom I was going to be a stay-at-home mom. I wondered if she was disappointed. All I ever grew up hearing was that I needed to be a professional and be better than her. But instead, she has constantly chosen these last few years to cheer me on as a mom and remind me that this is why she came here.

I owe a lot to immigrants, so do you.

ICE is evil; what is happening is evil. The fact that people have died trying to protect people from being harmed, discriminated against, and taken is evil. If we’re going to be loud about immigration laws, but not loud about ICE killing people… you’re not concerned about “people following the law”. #daughterofimmigrants
