I’ve navigated this journey since my son was two year old. It’s been me seeking and researching for resources and support in order to meet his needs. I remember our first IEP and how devastating it was to hear people pick apart my son based on a document and I’ve also experienced great job watching him grow and learn more about himself and his needs. Each year has been hard to navigate and trying to find the right school for him, while wanting the best environment and best education/ services. It always seems like the two are impossible to get, but believing that won’t always be the case. Kids deserve to be in schools that make them feel safe and also obtain proper education, services and support. 

As a parent I can’t stress enough how important it is for you to advocate for your kid. To make sure they get the support they need, to listen to their teachers with a grain of salt and do the work to get them what they need. This journey requires you to do the leg work, and yes it’s discouraging AF, you have to do the work to get what they need and you also need to make sure you aren’t getting in the way of your kids ability to thrive with services. 

I’ve shared bits of my journey, while also trying to keep a lot of it to myself. Though this is my journey, it’s really my son’s journey and I always want to make sure I honor him with what I share on here. Today was hard, the last four years have been draining and I’m thankful for the people that have literally carried me through educating me and empowering me to fight harder. 

So if you need to be empowered, I hope you hear this and take it for what it is. If you’re in NYC and need support, I’m here. Consider me a mama advocate friend.
