.@johnnovis shared this photo for our ongoing #EyeOnClimate series—a campaign dedicated to raising awareness of climate change impacts and solutions around the @UnitedNations’ Annual Meeting on Climate Change, #COP23:

“This photo, titled, ‘Crescent Moon Spring Along the Silk Road’ was shot for @greenpeace from a microlight plane about 6 kilometers south of Dunhuang Cit­y, Gansu, China. Crescent Moon Spring is an oasis in the desert surrounded by the Echoing Sand Mountain. The formation of the lake resulted from a geological peculiarity and natural wonder where the topography of the sand dunes force the incoming desert winds to spiral before finally retreating in an easterly direction. Thus, the sands do not smother the spring. The natural harmony between the spring and the dunes has attracted visitors for many years, eventually becoming a World Heritage Site by @UNESCO. However, since the 19­70s, #climatechange, tourism and industrialization have caused the lake to shrink dramatically in size and depth. Concerned scientists and environmentalists are currently studying changes in glacial melt from the distant Qilian Mountains, which feeds the Dang River, as a potential cause.”
