I was volunteering at Let’s Talk Cancer hosted by the amazing team at Ryerson University and explaining to students how diagnostic laboratories can sequence tumour samples from many different patients in one reaction. One student asked me if different tags are added to each sample to distinguish different samples. The answer was yes, specifically molecular barcodes are attached to different samples so sequenced information can be separated by computer algorithms. It was the student’s ability to draw connections from inquisitiveness that refreshed my curiosity to keep asking questions about my own work.

Je faisais du bénévolat dans le cadre du symposium Let’s Talk Cancer (parlons cancer) organisé par l’extraordinaire équipe de l’University Ryerson, en expliquant à des étudiants comment les laboratoires de diagnostic séquençaient des fragments de tumeur de nombreux patients en une seule opération. Une des étudiantes m’a demandé si des marqueurs étaient utilisés pour distinguer les échantillons les uns des autres. La réponse était oui : des codes à barres moléculaires sont liés à chacun des échantillons de manière à ce que l’information séquentielle puisse être séparée au moyen d’algorithmes informatiques. Or, la curiosité de cette jeune femme avide de connaissances a réveillé la mienne, faisant en sorte que je me remette à poser des questions sur mon propre travail.
