🧠😷 What is Meningitis B? Doctor explains the UK outbreak

What's happening inside the body, how it spreads, and why so many young adults have no protection against it. 

Meningitis is inflammation of the meninges, the protective layers surrounding the brain and spinal cord. 

This outbreak in Kent is caused by the bacterium Neisseria meningitidis group B. 

Unlike viral meningitis, bacterial meningitis can be treated and prevented with antibiotics — so seek medical help if you've had close or prolonged contact with someone diagnosed.

 The MenACWY vaccine given at university does NOT protect against MenB. The UK began routine MenB vaccination for babies in 2015, meaning most current young adults are unprotected.
