Measles outbreak in London! 😷🇬🇧 Doctor explains what you need to know

Images from @nhs
website - please follow NHS official advice.

Measles cases are rising across England, and health officials are warning that further outbreaks could happen if vaccination rates don’t improve.

Measles is far more contagious - and far more dangerous - than most people realise.

It usually starts with cold‑like symptoms, then small white spots inside the cheeks, followed by a rash.

But the real concern is the complications: pneumonia, meningitis, seizures, blindness.

Tragically, it can be fatal in rare cases, even years after catching the disease due to encephalitis. To find out more about encephalitis, go to @encephalitisinternational
- as it is World Encephalitis Day (22 Feb).

In pregnancy, measles can also lead to miscarriage or stillbirth.

The MMR vaccine protects against measles, mumps and rubella. There is no evidence of any link with autism. But UK vaccination rates are now at their lowest point in a decade, which increases the risk of outbreaks.

If you or your child aren’t vaccinated, speak to your GP or local health service. Vaccination is the safest and most effective way to protect yourself and the people around you.
