You can grow a years worth of onions for your garden in these milk jugs - here’s how:

Onions are easy to grow from seed, and they don’t mind a little cold, or having their roots teased apart to transplant. So, if we make a mini greenhouse out of repurposed milk jugs we can pack the onion seeds into a smaller space and keep our seed trays for our more sensitive crops.

Add drain holes to the base of your jug and remove the cap
Cut your jug in half leaving a hinge where the handle is
Add your soil, plant your seeds and label them inside so it doesn’t wash away

All that’s left to do is tape your jug shut and place them in a sunny spot protected from wind!

You’ll want to trim your onion seedlings down when they reach six inches tall so they can focus their energy on growing stronger roots and transplant them out about five inches apart into garden beds in early spring.
This seed starting method works best with seeds that don’t mind the cold like onions. It’s also a great way to get a head start on your cold-hardy spring crops. Let me know if you want my full list of everything you can grow using this method.
