Startup founders “build in public” to get users.

In college, I “built in public” to get offers and interviews.

My name is Skyler Basco, and my story goes like this.

In 2021, I was rejected by all of my dream Ivy League universities.

So I attended a non target university.

But when I started my first semester, I saw everyone from top tier schools already landing internships for the summer.

And after applying to hundreds of internships, all I got was “unfortunately” emails and ghosted applications.

All that was going through my head was:

I don’t have an Ivy League degree.

I don’t have any connections in tech.

I don’t have the best coding skills.

But I stumbled across a quote that said:

“No matter what you do, if you create content on it, you will outperform the competition.”

So I became active on LinkedIn and various tech communities throughout college.

If I won a hackathon, I posted about it.

If I built a personal website, I posted about it.

If I spoke at a tech event, I posted about it.

And eventually, DMs from recruiters started to pile in.

Interview invites started to pile in.

Offers started to pile in.

And now I’m a full time Product Manager in Big Tech, have completed multiple internships throughout college, and have been creating content to help others do the same.

So while you don’t necessarily have to be a content creator to land offers, the option is out there.

There are so many pathways to landing internships, but that’s simply the selling point I chose.

Your work is important, but driving visibility and exposure to your work is just as important. ❤️
