Whether you’re renting or you own, this is something everyone should do, and most people haven’t.

Step 1: Record your home in detail. Walk through every room and capture everything: personal artifacts, high-value items, sentimental pieces, inside drawers and cupboards, all of it.

Don’t rush it.
Don’t forget your garage either. Your snowblower, lawnmower, and power tools add up fast. And walk through your backyard too, patio furniture and outdoor equipment count as well.

Step 2: Organize it in the cloud. Create a folder called ‘Home Inventory’ in Google Drive or iCloud. Add subfolders for each room or section of your home and upload your photos and videos into the right folders. Label clearly so it’s easy to find if you ever need it.

Step 3: Back it up. Email the videos to yourself as an extra layer, and if you have a safety deposit box, save everything to a hard drive and store it there too.

God forbid you ever need to file an insurance claim, but if you do, you’ll have clear visual proof ready to go. No back and forth. No fighting to prove what you owned.

This takes an afternoon. Fighting with an insurance company is a nightmare.

Share this with your friends too!
