No one really knows how the raccoons ended up here but since they have no known predators on the island they live about 6x longer than raccoons on the mainland.

To visit you can book a tour at the link in my bio for about $100 per person which includes a boat ride, kayak rentals, and watermelon that’s for you and is definitely not for feeding the raccoons... The kayak paddle is an easy 1.5 miles through mangroves and your guides will go at a leisurely pace to make it doable for most skill levels! If you really don’t want to kayak they can drop you off at the island by boat and you’ll spend extra time there!

While there is a risk of rabies with any wild animal, there has never been a known case of rabies on this island. The raccoons really have no way of contracting rabies since there aren’t any other animals on the island that could give it to them. Plus 50% of animals with rabies are afraid of water so there’s a good chance if one had it they would not ever come to the beach or be in the water. The Florida International University and Florida Wildlife Commission regularly check on the raccoons to be sure they are healthy and happy here.
