In our thriller hockey film, @bendersmovie, the hockey rink is running off a generator due to a blizzard. As a DP, that gives me lots of freedom to decide which lights are on, and which lights are off. Woo! 

In this cafe scene that takes place at the end of the film, it’s nighttime and the snow has piled up outside the windows. Working with low drop ceilings is always a challenge — especially with our tall ensemble cast. Our Gaffer, @thenextsamuel, gave a great suggestion of installing pendant lamps with tungsten bulbs to give us flexibility in lighting, and add visual interest to the shot. We collaborated with our amazing Production Designer, @uglygaybabyboy and our Production Coordinator/Carpenter @will.t.schmid to pick the right ones/install them safely. The pendant lamps gave us warm motivated light to play with, contrasting our cool, moonlight tones coming from the exterior snowy windows. 

In the kitchen, we opted for a cooler look motivated from light spilling off screen — either from the moonlight or an overhead florescent we couldn’t see. We used the Aputure 400x bouncing into a #2 mirror to create controlled, natural light around the space — shaping it further with flags. This set the stage for when we moved into the kitchen later in the film. 

Lastly, we used an Aputure INFINIBAR outside the window in the cafe to add moonlight spilling on the wall and the characters. Our G&E team created an incredible black out tent outside to control our snowy ambience — more on that breakdown in a later video ❄️
