Whenever I light my films, I start by observing the natural light already in the space, then I brainstorm on how to elevate that light for our scene. When I have the ability, I always try to light the space — like an interior lighting decorator — rather than merely lighting my subject. You can do this by planning out where to place your practical lamps, where you want to add light coming in through windows, etc. It helps to ground the subject in the room, and gives them space to move around more freely.

In this scene we focused on 4 main areas of lighting:

• The Background: By pushing the LS1200D through the windows
• The Middle: By pushing the LS600c II through the keyhole in the door with haze to highlight the subject for the wide
• The Edge Light: By using the INFINI bar off the right side of frame to give the impression the light is coming from the keyhole in the closeup
• The Key Light: By using the INFINI bars on the floor to mimic the light coming from a fireplace 🔥

How’d we do? Let me know if you have any questions on this set up! I’m happy to break down the “WHY” behind our choices even further.
