Thoughts on conditioning, #attachment & coercion

Many of our attachment wounds exist because it was not safe to self express in the conditioned environments we’ve lived in. Whether as children or adults, there is much we are “coerced” into involuntarily, to have our basic needs met.

As children our basic needs for survival shape our foundational attachments. We may not realize that our childhood and early adult lives often are operating out of a conditioned response to the systemic resources we have or don’t have access to.

In unhealthy environments, often those experiencing power imbalances will start to make complicit decisions in order to maintain their current status in the system.

This creates a dynamic of fear of rejection or revocation of resources that an individual has to weigh when they find themselves at risk but unsure what to do, or under-resourced to leave.

Even when speaking up against the people or systems in power, the threat remains great to risk attachment for autonomy.

Resources can include safety, food, shelter, water, caretaking, money, nurturing, love, education (formal or cultural).

They are often the main conditioning point by which the subconscious survival needs of humanity form. Resources are also one of the largest ways by which power imbalances leverage individuals into compliance.

When we victim blame individuals we potentially create a barrier that inhibits liberation by attaching shame to those that are experiencing coercion, control, or even abuse and violence.

One of the first steps towards recognizing coercive control in your every day environments is looking at ways in which you are already self-betraying - staying attached to unhealthy people, places or things, that you may (or may not) have the ability to change.

And instead of judging yourself, compassionately ask yourself:

How is/was this attachment serving my survival?
What sensations come up in my body when I think about leaving this attachment?
If those feelings or sensations could say something what would they say?

In inquiry we take steps towards empowerment, in sharing we change in community.
