Living the entirety of my life at high elevations, it never ceases to amaze me how nature cuts cords with dead weight that can no longer support the whole.

Snow is rare in May in Utah. Today up the canyon for a quick lunch break, I observed the wreckage. Limbs strewn, unable to hold the weight of the snow as branches sprouted spring foliage.

I grieved the dead wood flung aside. So much loss in one freakishly late storm.

Sitting, my mind wandered to the winters we weather in our lives. Often thinking we are coming into rebirth, only to be slammed again by harsh storms that strip us down.

Winter unwilling to relinquish its grip, takes no hostages. And yet, in this hibernation it demands we resources ourselves. To store energy. Requiring us to preserve our strength.

In the cold dark shadows, its solstice on the precipice of spring, she comes to reinforce the prioritization of survival so that we are rooted enough to thrive.

Sitting in my most recent ceremony of trauma integration work, I floated in water and very clearly cycled through the words “cut all weight”. Over and over, it came to me, the questions:

How is _____ serving me?
How am I serving it?
Who am I without the attachment to that story/person?
What/who can I become if I release it?

For years I tethered myself to others, defining my worth off of their perceptions of me. Unable to bloom, I was stuck as a seed, seeking attachment over autonomy.

Su!c!d3 Ideation mirrored to me over and over how much I had to release in order to not drown. Every ideation showed up, revealing my worth tethered in relation to someone else. To some other ideology.

The more I came home to myself, the less I find myself ideating. The more I shed weight the bigger I bloom.

The more winter stripped me raw even as I came to bloom, the stronger I had to seep my roots into the earth in order to weather the storm alone. No one could save me in SI.

Sometimes nature has to help us cut weight. Seeing those branches was witnessing Mother Earth, pruning her branches to thrive.
