When a client Is dropping into the emotion of their story, it is the CI practitioner’s role to support the client in exploring a somatic discovery of the space where they can label the feelings and emotions they are having in that present moment in relation to past memory. The client is at all times in power to determine how they will participate in CI and what their intentions are for that session.

If a client gets emotionally heightened, a CI practitioner is also trained in supporting the client in identifying parts that may hold memories and offering them compassion - many times encouraging and indicating that there is no rush, no time limit and allowing the individual to give themself permission in taking that time for themself.

When an individual has hidden or suppressed trauma for a long period of time, or even expressed it but was dismissed by those they told, it can take time for them to be able to give themselves the opportunity to witness these events form the past as well as sit in them and identify the somatic feeling and emotions associated with said events. It is a very vulnerable place to be in, which should be handled with care, trust, attunement and compassion by the CI practitioner.

In a Compassionate Inquiry, I will continue to support the container of presence by asking clarifying questions to help support you in verbalizing what is happening for you and encouraging sitting in the present moment of what is coming up for the client, while also honoring and validating their experience and how hard it must have been for the client.

As @gabormatemd says, Trauma is not about what happened to you as much as it is how you constricted yourself to survive when no one could see you in your suffering.
