My name is Adrienne. I have a triple neurodivergence, Dyslexia, Autism & ADHD. I was born with a connective tissue disorder in my eyes, an invisible disability. I live with Hashimoto’s disease - my thyroid was removed in my late 20s after the birth of my third child & a thyroid pre-cancer diagnosis, around the same time my son was diagnosed with T1D.

I’ve led the majority of my life mis-diagnosed, misunderstood, and misrepresented. Unseen, I was spiraling in shame as I swung from high achieving productivity to burnout, over and over and over. Being raised in a religion and systemic construct that if you just try harder you can become better - ableism was the root of the shame I carried for years, in trying to be “normal”.

When I turned to doctors they over medicated me, which only caused more stressors and unpredictable side effects.

There’s a misconception in the healing community that to heal is to be made whole. For me, healing is accepting myself for who I am, accepting the path my body has taken, but not letting the pathology become an identity. Yes it is a part of me. But not a culminating definition of who I am. Disability, sickness, illness does not have to define us.

It doesn’t go away, and we can heal, but what we heal from isn’t the getting rid of an autoimmune disease as much as it is healing from the trauma surrounded chronic & invisible illness & medical gaslighting.

Strabismus and a connective tissue disorder aren’t going away. Autism doesn’t go away. My ability to manage symptoms might be better or worse on any given day, but if I were to try “heal” myself from these I’d forever be living in a state of failure.

Healing with divergences and chronic illness is acceptance, advocacy, stepping into authenticity, and allowing myself to be autonomous from the constructs or ableism others try to project onto me.
