I get a little dazed everytime I meet a young person who has never heard of Couchsurfing. I get it – it’s not for everyone. If one is drained and can get himself one week of holiday every two years that’s not the best option obviously. Or if one has enough cash to not worry about where is he staying tonight. That’s fair and clear.

But what about all those broke young folks saying they want to travel around the world and then spending ⅙ of their (or their parents) wage for a night at a hostel? That means they have never even bothered to google “how to travel without spending much”. Besides, CS not about free, it is about putting yourself into a position of unpredictability. And that’s a great way to have some adventure in the age of Google Maps. Nowadays you can hardly get lost in some most parts of the world but there is still some ways to get lost in unfamiliar minds of a human. CS and hitchhiking are so refreshing in a way that you meet people outside of your algorithmic social circle. The only thing you have in common is the willingness to help someone and a openness for unpredictability.

I remember spending a weekend in Brazil with a great guy who identifies himself firstly as a robust Trump supporter. Another one smelled really bad. And I get to hide my meaty sandwiches a lot when staying with vegetarians. But hey – they welcomed me and devoted their time to me. And they were really, really Great People, despite some unimportant differences in our lifestyles. 
Once I met an Italian guy who was on CS since the beginning. He hosted MORE THAN 500 travellers in his life. „I’ve seen everything“ – that was his words about the experience.

I believe Couchsurfing fits well in a modern list of „things to do in life“. It’s ok not to do it, but never even considering/ knowing of that way of travel is missing an important lesson of how generous is mankind, how little does it take for two strangers to become good friends.
