Come with me to ➡️ 📍Mexicali, Mexico

The capital of Baja California, MX and my mom’s hometown, is a vibrant city blending modern industry with rich Mexican cultural traditions

Located just south of the U.S. border, it is a key economic and cultural hub

Mexicali’s economy thrives on manufacturing, especially in electronics, medical devices, and automotive parts, bolstered by its proximity to the U.S. and the presence of maquiladora factories. The city is also known for its strong agricultural sector, with large-scale production of crops like wheat, cotton, and vegetables in the surrounding Imperial Valley

Mexicali has a diverse and proud Mexican heritage, with a significant number of residents, including my family, who all trace their roots to different parts of Mexico, particularly from the states of Sonora and Sinaloa

Mexicali is also known for its regional cuisine, which features a unique blend of Sonoran and Baja culinary traditions, including carne asada, burritos, and street tacos, as well as the fusion of Chinese and Mexican influences due to a large Chinese community presence in Mexicali

Despite its modern industrial growth, Mexicali has maintained its traditional Mexican charm, with plazas, colorful murals, and local markets that reflect its cultural pride and deep connection to Mexico

Just outside the city, La Rumorosa is a dramatic mountain pass that stretches across the rugged terrain of the Sierra de Juárez. Known for its steep inclines and sweeping views of the desert valley below, La Rumorosa is famous for its windmills, which harness the strong winds of the area for renewable energy. The drive along this scenic route is a favorite for both locals and tourists

Not far from La Rumorosa, Casa de Piedra (House of Stone), a striking rock formation, is known for its enormous boulders and peaceful surroundings, making it a popular spot to see

Even though I visited Mexicali often as a kid, I now have a deeper appreciation and curiosity for the city as an adult. My mom immigrated to the U.S. at 18, and seeing her hometown always brings me joy and a sense of connection to her past
