Kaiseki: a must-try for foodies in Kyoto 🥢

Kyoto is considered the heart of traditional kaiseki cuisine, a multi-course Japanese dining experience centered on seasonal ingredients, local produce, and beautifully balanced flavors.

To be transparent, this meal was a splurge. We usually cook at home and don’t eat out often, especially not at Michelin-starred restaurants. But knowing how much we appreciate food as a family, several friends encouraged us to give this experience a try.

Each course was delicate and thoughtfully plated, featuring seasonal vegetables, fresh fish, and comforting, warming broths. All of us, from kids to grandparents, tried things we hadn’t encountered before, and we all felt it was a truly unique and memorable meal.

Tips:
• Make reservations—seating is often limited
• Lunch is a better value than dinner, but still pricey (expect ¥6,000–¥12,000 per person / ~$40–$90 USD)
• No strict dress code for lunch (smart casual is fine)

Is food a priority when you travel, or more of an afterthought?

PS: Most of our meals in Japan were very affordable—from breakfast for a few dollars at 7-Eleven or FamilyMart to huge ramen bowls for under $7 usd per person. I share those budget-friendly options in our trip itinerary too—linked in bio 🇯🇵✨
