🌌 Want to See the Northern Lights? Read This!

If your feed has been blowing up with aurora photos after the recent solar storm, here’s an ultimate beginner-friendly guide to how to actually see the Northern Lights yourself — not just on Instagram. These are the exact tips we used to plan our trip to Fairbanks to where we saw the aurora 2 out of the 3 nights we were there 11.8-11.2025.

📍 Go North — WAY North: Head toward the Aurora Oval for the highest chance of activity and consistency: Alaska, Northern Canada, Iceland, Norway, Sweden.

🌙 Best Time to Go: September–March = long, dark nights. Waning or crescent moon = best. (But strong aurora CAN outshine a nearly full moon — like it did for us on 11/10 and early 11/11)

🌌 Darkness > Everything: Even with perfect space weather, you still need dark, clear skies, zero light pollution, and good horizon visibility. Clouds can block everything — even during major storms.

📈 Track KP + Bz: KP index = how strong the geomagnetic storm is. Bz (south/negative) = the “unlock” that makes lights more visible farther south. Apps we used: Aurora, Hello Aurora. Bz can only be predicted ~30 minutes out — so real-time tracking is key.

🕛 Be willing to Stay Up: Our aurora tour guide told us he had no idea how many auroras he slept through before he started doing night tours. 😆 If you really want to see them, you have to be awake when the sky is ready to dance. The best show I saw was at 4:30am.

🌌 Save + Share This Guide: Tag your dark-sky crew and send this to anyone planning an aurora trip soon. Follow us everydayadventurefam for more tips and details from our Alaska aurora adventure ✨
