From the moment the Warren Pribeagu family brought Birger home, (#willowbenlitter2) they knew there was something special about him. His nose was extraordinary ~ but more than that, it was the way he seemed to sense when someone wasn’t quite right. He would gently gravitate toward injuries or areas of inflammation, as if he understood in his own quiet way. That natural sensitivity to human scent is what led them to mantrailing.
What started as a curiosity ~ a way to channel his remarkable ability ~ quickly became a calling. They learned that their local Search and Rescue has a K9 team with three disciplines: tracking/trailing, air scent, and human remains detection. This is not just a volunteer group; it’s a highly dedicated team that trains to professional standards and operates under the direction of the Sheriff’s Office.
To earn his place training with the trailing team, Birger achieved his AKC Canine Good Citizen title, invested countless hours working alongside a trailing trainer, and successfully passed a temperament evaluation with the Sheriff’s K-9 unit. Each step has required focus, discipline, and heart ~ and he has risen to every challenge.
As they work toward certification over the next year and a half, Birger’s final test will be completing a blind search on an aged trail at least 1.5 miles long within a designated timeframe. It’s a demanding standard ~ and one I know he will approach with the same quiet determination he’s shown since day one.
For now, they’re simply grateful. Grateful for his gifts. Grateful for the mentors guiding them. And grateful for the opportunity to one day serve their community alongside their incredible team.
Birger is the product of a breeding program built on deliberate selection, proven lines, and a deep respect for the breed’s purpose.
