Been thinking a lot about the things I learnt, challenges I faced, and just general reflections about my PhD. One of the things which really helped me quite a lot throughout my journey was writing and drawing by hand. I know, it’s such a small thing but thinking back on the whole process, these practices have been incredibly useful research techniques for making sense of my work. It’s how I have learnt to turn rough ideas into more polished work that furthers my research.

Some people prefer to type/write digitally because it requires less planning and leaves more room for error. Maybe you agree and can’t even remember the last time you wrote by hand. I disagree that physical writing requires thinking beforehand because to me writing by hand facilitates thinking.

Actually, there’s a really cool journal article which argues for considering writing and drawing by hand as key research practices; if you’re interested, you should check it out - “Knowledge in the making: drawing and writing as research techniques” Hoffman and Wittmann, 2013)

As I was reading my thesis in preparation for my viva, I was really struck by how some of the work I’m most proud of in my final thesis was originally written by hand.
