On this International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, we celebrate athletes who use sport to break barriers.

Meet Aegir Ólafsson, a powerlifter from specialolympicsiceland.

Growing up in the countryside, he discovered powerlifting and turned it into a daily commitment, building purpose, confidence, and pride through training. His coach, Örvar Arnarson, describes him as “completely committed… he doesn’t stop until the time is finished.”

Aegir’s dedication led him to compete at the Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023, an unforgettable experience that filled his family and supporters with pride. 

Back home, he continued to inspire others at the theipf Championships in Keflavik. Powerlifting has given Aegir a platform to challenge himself, grow in confidence, and show the world the power of sport.
