That night, I went home and told my mother I'd met a very nice girl. Years later, we found out she'd written about me in her diary the same day. We were friendly for two years before I asked her to prom. She had already said yes to someone else, but decided to go with me instead. A week later, we snuck off to a rugby field during a friend's birthday party. We listened to music, looked up at the stars, and kissed for the first time. Then came different universities and years of long distance. We'd FaceTime for hours a day, eating, studying, watching Downton Abbey. Not even talking half the time, just living our lives on a screen together. After eight years apart, we finally moved into a tiny flat in Paris. We were living in the same city for the first time in our relationship. I was about to propose, and just as everything was finally falling into place, my job called me to New York. When I told Eugénie, I didn’t know what to expect, but she said, 'We only get one life. Let’s go.' So we went. We'd always planned to get married back in France, but we were in New York and in love.
