“God thunders wondrously with his voice; he does great things that we cannot comprehend. For to the snow he says, ‘Fall on the earth,’ likewise to the downpour, his mighty downpour. He seals up the hand of every man, that all men whom he made may know it.” -Job 37:5-7

Something about a storm that demands attention, in danger, absolutely, but even in safety there is something alluring about it. There is a weight and power that is beyond our control, and reminds us how small we are. In the presence of such power, we are brought low. Not in fear alone, but in awe as well. Awe of a God who speaks and creation obeys. Awe of a power that cannot be controlled, resisted, or ignored. It is not chaos in the storm, for it is controlled and designed. For as the skies darken and fill with storm clouds, bringing torrential rains and winds, a mighty power, we see a glimpse of God’s voice, the One who commands the storm.

This image of God’s power and voice demands our attention. When there is a lull in the storm and it seems quiet, there is something that snaps us back, something we cannot ignore in the thunder. While we may want to live our lives in the peace and quiet, something snaps us back to the power of the LORD. Our plans pause, our work rests, and we are reminded that we are not in control. Our hands are sealed, so that we might see His.

God’s plans are not fully known to us; we do not comprehend the how and why, we do not know when. This is not withheld in cruelty, but simply because it is beyond our understanding and position to know. The storm is both a display and declaration, shouting God’s glory and greatness, calling us to recognize it.

So we stand in awe of the One who commands the storm, the One who is mightier than it. His voice is mighty, His power is unmatched, and all creation moves at His word.
