Patrick Lyoya was 26 years old. His family escaped the Democratic Republic of the Congo as refugees fleeing violence. But the worst possible violence found Patrick. I wish we didn’t have to say his name. Not like this. I wish we could celebrate his contributions to the world after having the opportunity to fulfill his dreams, but he was robbed of that potential when a Grand Rapids police offer killed him April 4th.  Of course, the body cam didn’t record the shooting. Of course, the officer is on PAID administrative leave. Of course, people will make assumptions about Patrick’s guilt or innocence. And yet, of course, he didn’t deserve death. 

Nobody wants their child to become famous as a martyr.  Almost two years since George Floyd’s murder and the story hasn’t changed. 255 police killings this year. Black people killed at twice the rate of white people. The victims are disproportionately Black men and boys. 

The story won’t change until the policies change. It’s really time to make moves, y’all. #BlackLivesMatter #PatrickLyoya
