October is breast cancer awareness month, so what better time to show you how to "feel yourself" and do a #selfbreastexam! Exams should be done on bare skin, not over clothing. Use your left hand to examine your right breast and then switch.

Checking once a month, about a week after your period, can help you become familiar with your breast tissue. Checking after your period can help eliminate any confusion if you happen to be someone who experiences #breasttenderness before your periods.

Don't worry if you miss a month. Patients always say, "Dr. King, I don't do them every month." To which I reply, that's ok! What's most important is that you are comfortable doing the exam and thereby familiar with your body.

If you notice any skin changes (dimpling, peeling, redness, warmth), tenderness/pain, swelling, or a lump, you need to go and see your doctor. Don't be scared. I know that's easier said than done. Just make the appointment. 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. The earlier a diagnosis is made, the better the prognosis. And guess what, it's quite possible that you won't have #breastcancer, but you won't know until you go. Make yourself a priority if you find a concern.

Right now, mammograms, clinical breast exams, and self-breast exams are our main tools to screen for and detect breast cancer. Women should start getting #mammograms at age 40, or sooner based on family history. #breastexams can start at age 21. I hope this helps. Share with the ladies in your life!
