As the first Black woman elected to Congress in 1968, Shirley Anita Chisholm paved the way for many Black women. She was born in Brooklyn, New York to Caribbean parents and served as the representative for New York’s 12th congressional district for seven terms. Chisholm is one of the founding members of the @congressionalblackcaucus and was the first Black woman to seek nomination for president of the United States from one of the two major political parties. Upon retiring from Congress, she became a professor at Mount Holyoke College teaching politics and women's studies from 1983 - 1987. #ARYEXWHM #womenshistorymonth
