#206Archives | Thelma Dewitty was hired in 1947 as the Seattle Public Schools System’s first African American teacher. She is a graduate of Wiley College, where she earned her bachelor's degree in 1941. She attended graduate school at the University of Washington, where she began writing a mathematics book for children. 

Dewitty was also active in the NAACP and served as the Seattle branch President in the late 1950s. She also held various roles as she served on the Washington State Board Against Discrimination and volunteered on the Board of Theater Supervisors for Seattle and King County. #ARyexBHM
