Today, we are crowning NASA astronaut Christina Koch as our #QueenoftheWeek 👑

Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and raised in Jacksonville, North Carolina, Koch was inspired to become an astronaut from a young age. She participated in an exchange program at the University of Ghana where she studied astrophysics and earned Bachelors of Science degrees in electrical engineering and physics from North Carolina State University in Raleigh. She earned a Master’s in electrical engineering from the University as well and completed the NASA Academy program at the Goddard Space Flight Center. 

In 2013, Koch was selected by NASA to become an astronaut. She completed her training in 2015, qualifying her for future missions. In 2019, Koch launched on her first mission to the International Space Station. While on the mission, NASA extended her trip. The extension lasted until February 2020 when she returned to Earth after 328 days in space, breaking the record for the longest single continuous spaceflight by a woman. During the mission, Koch also performed the first all-female spacewalk. 

Now, she’s continuing to make history! Koch is the only female member of the Artemis II crew that launched on April 1, 2026. On April 6, the crew made their flight by the moon, making Koch the first woman to travel around the Moon and fly beyond low Earth orbit. Because the mission also took the crew farther from Earth than any other humans, Koch also holds the record for the farthest a woman has ever traveled from Earth. 

Koch has shared how she hopes young women in science know that they can do absolutely anything they want to and is vocal about the importance and impact of mentorship and collaboration in STEM fields.
