## Caption

Some of my earliest turkey hunting memories started well before daylight- riding with my dad and Troy down toward Exit 66 off Jalapa Road, back when the roads were quiet and the world felt still.

Troy was a machinist. He ran a dog named Bird Dog and wore a blue denim button-down, usually with a fresh pack of Marlboro Reds tucked into the pocket.

We’d make the long drive to public land, passing the BP with the old deer processing scale out back, then the brick school, and eventually into what felt like endless game management ground.

Even now, any time I get the chance to play chess in the woods with that 20-pound, tree-sleeping, prehistoric-looking bird, it takes me right back there.
