uOttawa lockdown suspect had replica firearm, student union demands action plan‼️😨🚨 (SWIPE) ➡️

New details have been released following the lockdown at the University of Ottawa, with Ottawa Police confirming the man arrested was in possession of a replica firearm.

Police say the situation began around 4:20 p.m. after reports of a suspicious person near the Rideau Centre. Using CCTV footage, officers tracked the individual to the university campus and nearby uOttawa Station, before arresting him off campus on Waller Street shortly before 7 p.m.

The university issued a lockdown alert at 5:18 p.m., warning students of a potential violent incident and instructing them to barricade themselves inside buildings, stay away from windows and doors, and remain silent.

The lockdown lasted nearly two hours before the campus was declared safe, with no injuries reported.

The suspect has since been charged with possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace and mischief, and is expected to appear in court.

Following the incident, the University of Ottawa Students’ Union is now calling for a clear and publicly communicated emergency action plan.

In a statement, they said many students were left confused due to unclear and delayed communication, noting that alerts were mainly sent through the SecurUO app, meaning not everyone received the message in time.

They are urging the university to improve how emergency updates are shared, suggesting broader communication methods like email to ensure all students are informed quickly in future situations.

University officials have since encouraged students to download the SecurUO safety app and reiterated that the safety of students, staff, and the campus community remains their top priority.

They also acknowledged how distressing the situation was and reminded students that wellness supports are available.
