Johnny starts off in full Big Breakfast mode, a bit cheeky, a bit all over the place, but Costello just rolls with it. What comes through straight away is how grounded Costello is about his career. When he’s asked what keeps him going after more than 20 years he basically shrugs it off and says it’s just what he does. No big ego, no dramatic answer, just pure love for making music

They get into how he’s always changed direction and never stayed in one lane. He talks about following curiosity rather than sticking to what people expect, which really explains why his catalogue is all over the place in the best way. From punk era beginnings to country records to orchestral work with Burt Bacharach, he never boxed himself in

There’s also a great bit about songwriting where he describes ideas just coming to him randomly, like walking down the street mumbling to himself. You can picture it. He doesn’t overthink it or dress it up as poetry, it just happens naturally, which probably explains why so many of his lyrics feel so sharp and real

Vaughan tries to pin him down on favourite lyrics and he basically says he can’t even remember them properly without running through the whole song, which is mad when you think about how many classics he’s written

They also touch on touring and how his audience has changed over the years. What used to be people his own age is now a mix of younger fans and older ones, and he genuinely doesn’t care who turns up as long as they’re into it. That says a lot about the kind of artist he is
