Stereo MC’s were a Nottingham then London based hip-hop/electronic outfit formed by Rob Birch and Nick Hallam.

By the early 90s they’d finally cracked it with “Step It Up” : a swaggering, bass-heavy track from Connected .

Their performance of “Step It Up” was peak early-90s chaos: loose, funky and slightly scruffy, with Birch prowling around the stage like he’d just wandered in from a warehouse party rather than a TV studio

For a few minutes, mainstream TV accidentally let something genuinely cool slip through the net.
