5 sites by women architects you should know

Internationally, many of the names in modern architecture that dominate the zeitgeist are men. Here are five groundbreaking sites created by women architects during the 1950s–70s.

1. Casa de Vidro in São Paulo, Brazil
Lina Bo Bardi, 1951

Rooted to the earth with delicate posts, the main volume of the house floats graciously above the ground. The design demonstrates Bo Bardi’s adaptation of European modernism to the natural settings and craft traditions of Brazil.

2. Abraj Al-Kuwait (Kuwait Towers) in Kuwait City, Kuwait
Malene Bjørn in collaboration with Sune Lindström and VBB, 1976

The towers represent the importance of water as a life-sustaining force in the Middle Eastern desert. Together, two of the spheres hold over 2.3 million gallons of water.

3. Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Architecture Building in Ankara, Turkey
Altuğ and Behruz Çinici, 1963

The building was made in the 1950s to reflect a political agenda that valued innovation and new models for learning.

4. Villa E-1027 in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France
Eileen Gray, 1929

Conceived as a retreat and vacation home for the architect and architectural author and editor Jean Badovici, the terraced Villa blends forward-thinking design principles with practical living.

5. Escuela Superior de Comercio Manuel Belgrano in Córdoba, Argentina
Osvaldo Bidinost, Jorge Chute, José Gassó, Mabel Lapacó and Martín Meyer, 1968

Built with a combination of exposed reinforced concrete and local stone, and features a sloped “floating” roof, it is a prime example of Brutalist architecture in Argentina.

All of these sites also have another thing in common—they’ve each been granted funding through Getty’s Keeping It Modern initiative, which aims to support the preservation of 20th-century architecture around the world.
