Linda Creed is a 2026 Inductee! 

Linda Creed was one of the defining lyricists of Philadelphia soul, shaping the emotional core of the Philly Sound through tender love songs that became R&B classics.

Her poetic, vulnerable lyrics paired with the lush orchestration of her longtime collaborator 2025 Inductee Thom Bell helped push 1970s soul toward a more orchestral and introspective style, setting a new standard for emotional storytelling in popular music.

Creed began writing songs as a teenager, inspired by Smokey Robinson and his ability to express complex emotion in his lyrics. Her breakthrough came when Dusty Springfield recorded “I Wanna Be a Free Girl,” leading to collaborations with the “Mighty Three” of Philly soul.

She went on to write major hits for the The Stylistics, including “You Are Everything,” “Betcha by Golly, Wow,” and “You Make Me Feel Brand New,” as well as songs for artists like Teddy Pendergrass and Whitney Houston.

Even after her tragic death in 1986, her songwriting continues to define the sound and emotional depth of soul music.
