Portable heaters add warmth, but they also add risk if not used safely.

Follow these two key safety measures to avoid home heating fires:
• Turn it off when you leave the room or go to bed. 
• Keep it 3 feet away from anything that can burn (e.g. furniture, bedding, curtains, papers).

Heating equipment -- including space heaters -- is responsible for more than 1 in 10 reported home fires (more than 38,000 annually), according to the National Fire Protection Association.
