This “Bearded Spirit” was designed as a nod to both the infamous pirate Blackbeard and the Graveyard of the Atlantic, which is the treacherous waters off North Carolina’s Outer Banks. There are an estimated 2,000 to 5,000 shipwrecks that lie to rest in this area due to shifting sandbars, violent storms, and war. Blackbeard was intimately tied to the North Carolina Coast, using the Outer Banks as his primary base and home in 1717-1718.
