"Understanding.  For instance, having a practical understanding of what "resonance" actually is, what "velocity" actually is, "efficiency" "leverage" or any of the words instructors have thrown your way that sound good and you nod your head yes with only a vague notion of what's being asked of you.  Actually understanding concepts keeps you honest in your assessment of whether you're achieving them.  If you're not, understanding can guide you to real solutions.  You can develop a plan because you know where you want to get to and are protected from veering off some other direction.  Understanding gives you that sense of "oh, that's why they told me to do it this way" that can propel you forward with confidence; can give your practice real momentum and energy that ambiguity cannot.  Understanding what the staff is looking for out of you, regardless of how well they can explain it themselves.  Understanding what the music needs from you so you can figure out how best to deliver that.  What is the point of what you're playing?  What is being emphasized?  Challenged?  Evoked?  Understanding how your favorite groups are actually achieving what they're doing rather than assuming things based on how they look or what you've heard.  Most importantly, understanding yourself and realizing that you don't have to do it and think about it the way others do if it really doesn't work for you.  That you can apply your strengths to fully realize the best version of YOUR hands and YOUR mind."⁠
