There are a couple of discussion points to have off of this goal. The obvious discussion point is the choice by Markstrom to enter the RVH here off the rush. Why the RVH is becoming a default on plays like this is beyond reason and it’s something coaches need to address with young goalies and the more seasoned goalies as well. The thing I find important to learn on this goal for young goaltenders and aspiring prospects, as well, is the fact that Zegras makes contact with this puck on the deflection literally inside the top of the crease. Markstrom is 6 foot six and chooses to play this flat and conservative and still gets beat far side. Even though he is in the RVH, if he still merely shifts up, he absolutely smothers this attempt and, probably snaps Zegras stick in half. This play is an absolute illustration of why it is so important to have confidence in your feet and develop your ability to read the rush.
