Thomas Melina Raab ’26 is one of just two student-athletes in the country to receive the NCAA Jim McKay Graduate Scholarship this year.

This $10,000 postgraduate scholarship recognizes excellence in academics, athletics, and a demonstrated commitment to a career in sports communications or media.

At Trinity, Thomas has balanced competition in cross country and track with his work in journalism and storytelling. He has gained experience as a writer for Trinity athletics, covering teams and developing his voice as a sports communicator.

In the classroom, he has combined his academic and professional interests through research and writing centered on sports and society, exploring how athletics intersect with culture and media.

“Sports are a microcosm of society, and athletes are more than just figures with a ball in their hands,” Thomas says. “Jim McKay’s legacy of humanizing coverage and his understanding of sports as something larger than competition helped set me on the path I’m on today.”

After graduation, he will pursue a master’s degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Hussman School of Journalism and Media, concentrating in theory and research.
