The powerhouse player served up more than a win at the 2025 US Open. She served up a powerful reminder of class, confidence, and respect.

Townsend came back from 3-5 in the first set to beat 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko 7-5, 6-1. But a lot of the headlines happened after the final point. At the net she heard Ostapenko accuse her of having “no class, no education” and warning her to “see what happens when we get outside the US.”

In her post-match press conference, Townsend stood her ground. She said she would not back down when insulted, especially after carrying herself with respect throughout the match. She explained that being called uneducated struck a nerve because that stigma has often been unfairly attached to her community, even when it is far from the truth. She made clear that respect is earned by how you carry yourself, and on that court she carried herself with brilliance.

Ostapenko has faced criticism before for her behaviour on court, from clashes with other players to incidents seen as unsportsmanlike, and her sharp exchanges in New York added to that reputation.

Ostapenko later posted on Instagram denying any racist intent and insisting she has “never been racist in my life” and that “for me it does not matter where you come from.” Still, the exchange highlights the unspoken baggage some words carry, and how easily sportsmanship can tip into something more.

Townsend didn’t back down, and that refusal to shrink is exactly what makes her shine.

You go, Tay! You let your racket do the talking and your game do the shining. Onto the next!
