Welcome to a new round of Funny Feet Facts.
I’m Markus M. Mey, author of the book “Am I Normal?” — available on Amazon.

Let’s get into it:
Today, we’re talking about Professor Dr. Richard von Krafft-Ebing.
He was the first to systematically categorize sexuality in a scientific way.
But — and this is important — he was also very much a man of his time.
Which means: a lot of what he described wasn’t just science… it was filtered through the moral standards of the 19th century.
So anything that didn’t fit the idea of “normal” sexuality was quickly labeled as abnormal — or even pathological.
One of the most fascinating examples? Obsession.
More specifically: shoe obsession.
Yes, really — a thing for shoes as early as 1894.
Krafft-Ebing describes cases of men who became intensely aroused at the sight of elegant women’s shoes — sometimes even more than in real intimacies.
To illustrate this, Krafft-Ebing presents a series of striking case studies that reveal how deeply these fixations could shape a person’s desire.
Back then, however, the line between “different” and “diseased” was… very thin.
And that’s what makes Krafft-Ebing’s work so fascinating.
On the one hand, it marks the beginning of modern sexology.
On the other, it clearly reflects the moral framework of his era.
In short:
He brought sexuality into scientific discussion —
but the script was still written by society.
And maybe that’s the key takeaway:
What we call “normal” often tells us less about human nature…
and more about the time we live in.
